plant – Sustainable Landscapes offers comprehensive landscape design and consultation services featuring inspiring and functional landscape solutions with an emphasis on environmentally responsible practices. We can assist in every step of the project from the initial consult to maintaining the finished product.

We take a holistic approach towards managing and restoring the Earth’s landscapes where resources are conserved, chemical use is restricted and labor inputs are reduced.

When designing, we look to nature for help in producing aesthetically pleasing and environmentally sound outdoor spaces.

Radio Appearance on KVEC News Talk 920:

Philosophy

Environmental efficiency is not a goal in itself but rather a by-product of our permaculture based designs.  We feel working with nature, not against it, is quite possibly the greenest approach a gardener/horticulturist/land manager can take.

We do not impose our needs on the landscape but believe the landscape will provide and direct the land use plan if one recognizes her patterns.

So, we go out and watch how natural systems work and take note of our findings.  With practice and wide-angle vision, we begin to see nature’s patterns emerge.  We can then direct our work towards mimicking these patterns to create sustainable environments that harmonize with the site’s natural systems.

We care for the Earth while creating the conditions for sustainability to happen.

Our designs have to work socially, environmentally and economically.

We aim for the least amount of change for the greatest effect; the least amount of work for the greatest yield.

We believe the problem is the solution.

Projects

Slack St., San Luis Obispo, Ca.

This client felt the time had come to remove their front lawn bordered by creosote-soaked railroad ties which was installed 25 years prior. The removal process involved planting right on top of the existing turf using a sheet mulch method where no machinery was used. Trees and other perennial edibles anchored this mini-botanical garden with paths weaving through drought-tolerant grasses, flowers and succulents. Some of the edibles included strawberry, blueberry, pineapple guava, loquat, pomegranate, jujube, Oregon grape and kumquat. The second phase turned the lower level into a 4-in-1 orchard where 24 trees were planted throughout 6 holes. Throughout this project, recycled and local materials such as lumber, hardware, drip tube, broken concrete, horse manure and woodchips found usefulness in very aesthetically pleasing ways.
